Uganda Rwenzori Washed V2

Uganda Rwenzori Washed One Roast

Uganda Rwenzori Washed V2

Here is our second washed coffee from the Rwenzori Mountains. Equally delicious, yet a more complex coffee in my mind. I know I shouldn’t obsess about variety, but this is closer to what you can expect from an SL28. If you wanted to try the other end of the spectrum of what it can taste like, there is/was the exotic  SL28 from Volcan Azul.

This year our Ugandan coffees are so different from other seasons. A combination of buying from the west (West is best?) rather than the more famous coffee-growing areas in the East, such as Mount Elgon, bordering Kenya. Isn’t it funny, how we used to use the border as a point of reference, rather than the country itself? With these Western gems, there is more body in the cup and it is literally perfect for Autumnal coffee drinking.

Unlike our first lot of Uganda, Rwenzori washed coffee, this lot is a touch more complex and once again, such a great allrounder.

Farm Stats

(Top Trumps if you prefer)

Farmers: Smallholder farms average size of 1/2 hectare.

Mill; Rwenzori Coffee Company

Area: Rwenzori, westen Uganda

Altitude: 1200 to 2300 Meters above sea level

Varietals: SL28, SL34

Process: Fully washed

Roast: Standard drop; medium filter.

Cup Potential 🥣

Aromatics: Carob and dark chocolate | Body: medium | Acidity: Soft brown fruit sugars and lime|

This coffee kicks off with lots of soft brown fruit sugars, chocolate, and cocoa, with an ambiguous suggestion of citrus fruit. You never know…Slowly but surely this unfolds into a chocolate-lime affair, with a subtle nod to the date-like background fruit. On cooling the acidity rises, although still sweet. All of the way to ambient you have the sweet brown fruit sugars fused with lime and cocoa.

In a batch brew filter, this is just the easiest coffee that empties itself from the flask. Truly, the easiest coffee to quaff.

Filter Recipe: This is a dream filter brew. I am yet to need more than 60g a litre.

Espresso Potential.

Recipe:16-18g into 32-36g of espresso liquid in 25-30 seconds. 93C seems to work.

9oz Milk-based drink: Carob, malty and chocolatey. This is not shy, good amounts of soluble make this taste great.

6oz Milk-based drink: Sweet, more lime and cocoa than the 9oz.

Espresso: 16-18g of coffee into 45g of espresso liquid 26-30 seconds.

This is vibrant, juicy, chocolatey, and (bright) stone-fruity. Super sweet too.

Local/ Farm Info

This coffee comes to us via the Rwenzori Coffee Company, and Omwani. This is the sum of many smallholder farmers, with great processing. I have written a little more here, to save you from having to read the same words on 3 different products from the same mill. These are exciting times indeed for Ugandan coffee.
