Rwanda Rwamatamu Hobe Espresso

Here is the most popular coffee in the roastery (so far) in 2025. Hobe Espresso has surprised me as it has gained favour in some places I wouldn’t have expected. This is wonderful news, as it is how speciality coffee began. Sharing experiences of amazing coffees through taste and connection. Let’s stop here before it gets cheesy, but I hope you get the idea and love the coffee too.

There is a little bit more here

Espresso Potential   🍜

Working from the most dilute: This is our most popular espresso right now!.

9oz Milk-based drink: Creamy, marmalade.

6oz Milk-based drink: Big, orangey citrus, some chocolate and a creamy delight.

Espresso: Orange, grapefruit, citrus sugars, and suave acidity.

We have developed Hobe a little more than we would normally roast a washed Rwandan coffee, to soften the acidity, for espresso. This has made the milk-based drinks better and more delicious too.

Farm Stuff

Rwamatamu was founded in 2015 by Rutaganda Gaston and Mukantwaza Laetitia to combat the poverty they saw in their local communities by creating jobs in harvesting and processing coffee.

Each smallholder farm delivers its daily picking. These are individually called day-lots and processed separately. This is a lot of work. Later these are blended into sizeable lots. This season, unbeknown to me, Benoir experimented to reduce the amount of work in creating multiple small lots. Fewer big lots were made using his many years of experience.

On our first cupping of pre-ship Rwamatamu coffees, I fell head over heels for Hobe. It’s the biggest single-washed lot of coffee I have bought and is (coffee) perfection. I was a little nervous at first but had encouragement from Bernice almost immediately. Being part of this chain allows more things to happen and people to grow.

Rwamatamu is a farm and a mill. Initially, both were launched in 2015 aiming for financial gain and contributing to the fight against poverty in rural communities through harvesting coffee. The farm at Rwamatamu has 20 hectares of coffee production, and the other coffee they mill and export is from local cooperatives and small producers. 80% of their employees are women. Their goal is to build healthy relationships with the community based on common values and goals. This is done by committing to a regular purchase of beans and investing in the growth of employees.
