Rwanda BUF Ubumwe

They just keep on coming! We are nearing the end of our coffees from Rwanda, with only one or two lots left this season to share with you. This lot is really aimed at espresso, although this is a more developed roast, it is still a really enjoyable filter. Don’t panic, this is not a new theme where we champion the darker roast. This is just a case of when it works, it works.

Top Trumps

Coffee Washing Station: Buf Ubumwe

Varietal: 100% Red Bourbon

Processing: Fully washed & sun-dried on raised beds

Altitude: 1,550 to 1,700 metres above sea level

Owner: Epiphanie Mukashyaka

Town / City: Kigali

Region: Kamonyi District, Southern Province

Roast: Dark Filter

Cup potential: Filter

Aromatics: Rich and orangey  | Body: Light| Acidity: Sweet Citrus|🥣

When hot this is rich caramel and orangey citrus comparable to an Oxford Marmalade. I find this way more enjoyable than I feel I should. On cooling the citrus becomes sweeter and longer on the finish with herbal and cocoa notes. If like me you also drink coffee all of the way down to cold, there is a touch of roast at the end.

Recipe: I have been brewing this from 60g per litre in filter and had great results.

Espresso

Espresso recipe: 16-18g into 45g +/- 26-33 seconds. 93C. Soft orange acidity, herbal and caramel.

6oz Milk-based: 16-18g of coffee into 30-36g 24-30 secs. Bright and juicy citrus punching through the milk.

9oz Milk-based: As above Oxford marmalade.

Rwanda BUF Ubumwe

Ubumwe is Buf’s fourth washing station, owned by the inspirational Epiphanie Mukashyaka. Ubumwe was picked as a great place for a mill, due to the high levels of soil nutrients, especially Phosphorus, Potassium, Zinc, and Boron, which are necessary for coffee growth and which contribute directly to cherry ripeness and root development. Although Umbumwe itself isn’t at the highest altitude, the mill serves approximately 500 farmers living at 1,550 to 1,700 metres.

The average farmer delivering to Ubumwe has the equivalent of an acre of ground and up to 300 trees. Ubumwe has its own dry mill onsite and also a QC lab, where they check every lot and feedback to the producers.
