Burundi Migoti Hill

Burundi Migoti Hill Filter Roast

Burundi Migoti Hill.

In 2025, we received Tanzanian coffees 6-7 months early, and our Burundian coffees have landed a little later than usual. This is all good news, as long as we have coffee! In some cases, coffee can improve with time, but not always.

This is my favourite of our washed Burundi coffees, and it should remain as a single if I get my way.

Top Trumps:

Name:  Burundi Migoti Hill
Location: Gomvyi, Western Burundi

Varietal: Red Bourbon

Number of farmers: 500+
Processing method: Fully washed and dried on raised beds,

The altitude of the farms: 1700 – 1900 masl
Average plantation size: 1-5 acres
Soil: Sandy, Clay, loamy soil

Roast: Light Filter.

Cup Potential:

|Aromatics: Apricot/ stone fruit | Body: Creamy| Acidity: Citric|

On the front end, Migoti hill is bright and juicy with limey acidity and dry citrus akin to a Seville orange. After the initial wake-up, there is so much sweetness. The balance of apricot, marmalade, sweet, and juicy acidity makes this such a great brew. On cooling, the liquor is almost like pearls of sweetness that get better and better. Overall, this is intense, delicious, and as clean as it gets.

In V60 this has a more subtle acidity and there is more of a floral leaning, a touch chocolatey, and some would say more balanced.

In espresso: If you have top-end espresso-making equipment and aren’t thinking about putting this anywhere near milk, this has promise too.

About this coffee:

“Coffee as a Catalyst for Growth and Prosperity”

Is the strap line at Burundi Migoti coffee. I have been lucky enough to meet Dan, a talented engineer and co-founder of Migoti. Not unlike Rwanda, this project is about helping local people grow a future through coffee, after (in this case) a 12-year civil war. The project started in 2016, building a small, modern mill at Mutambu. Others have followed. As I sit here in my cool office writing this, I am mindful that it is hard to explain with mere words the remoteness of this coffee. Regenerating the bourbon bushes after being left for so long and renewing a coffee future. Both the human spirit and the red bourbon are resilient.

Migoti’s wider goal is to help the neighbouring communities produce coffee of quality. The exchange is fair when we (the coffee business in developed countries) pay enough and buy the right quality.

We buy our Burundi coffees from Omwani.
